Options Available to You for Adult Braces

Posted on

Dental braces are usually associated with children and teens, as these are the formative years when tooth straightening may become a pertinent concern. However, not all kids get braces when they need to, due to various reasons such as lack of dental insurance, not being concerned about the condition of their teeth and more. Thus, you will find that some adults may require the dental braces later on in life. Since metal braces tend to be conspicuous, some adults may shy away from this form of treatment, as they do not want to stand out like a sore thumb. The good news is that you can opt for adult braces, which are designed to be age appropriate. Here are some of the options available to you for adult braces.

Ceramic Adult Braces

As the name suggests, these braces are made from ceramic rather than traditional metal. As such, they tend to cost more than conventional metal dental braces. The great advantage of these types of adult braces is that they blend right in with the colour of your teeth enamel. However, their ties are not made from ceramic. You would have to make a choice between elastic ties, which tend to be clear, or metal ties that will keep the ceramic braces in place. Although ceramic braces tend to be stain resistant, you would still have to watch your diet as the ties could easily change colour due to the foods or drinks you ingest. It should also be noted that ceramic braces are more brittle than metal braces, thus are susceptible to breaking if not cared for appropriately.

Lingual Adult Braces

These types of adult braces are inconspicuous since they are attached to the back of your teeth, rather than at the front. Since they are designed to be out of sight, they are a popular option for adults who are looking for treatment that will not make them stand out. However, it should be noted that these braces tend to be more expensive than their metallic and ceramic counterparts are as their installation is more complex. Although lingual braces may be a popular option for adults, they are not suited for everybody. People with small teeth should be wary of choosing this option as the braces could have an impact on their overall speech pattern due to the placement of their tongue.

Invisalign Adult Braces

These types of braces are deigned to appear invisible. They comprise of clear aligners, thus making it difficult for people to discern that you are undergoing any teeth straightening treatment. The aligners are also quite flexible, thus making them a comfortable option for patients needing this treatment.
